Both fiber optic cables and Cat6 cables can get the job done, but it depends on what you need your networking for.

In terms of networking, a vital component is the type of cable you use to transmit information.  Both fiber optic cables and Cat6 cables can get the job done, but it depends on what you need your networking for.  Choosing which cable to use is an issue many business owners face when setting up a customized network.  If you’re wondering which cables to use for your business, read on to learn more about each, and decide which is right for you.

What is Cat6 Cabling?

Cat6 is short for Category 6–it represents the fact that it is the sixth generation of Ethernet cables that is made by twisting copper wire.  In this case, Cat6 cables use four copper wires, similar to Cat5 cables.  However, Cat6 uses these wires to their full capacity, which sets it apart from previous generations.  It works at a much faster rate, and can transfer 1 gigabit per second.  Because it is so fast, the cable is great for VoIP systems and businesses that don’t have beefy network requirements.  There are some drawbacks, though–Cat6 cables have length limits, and are sometimes very bulky.  They’re not pretty, and require very specific connectors that might cause trouble.

What is Fiber Optic Cabling?

Many consider fiber optics to be the way of the future.  Fiber optics use light to transmit information through a clear tube that is surrounded with a thin layer of glass.  Information traveling at the speed of light means it is the fastest way to transmit information.  What’s more, fiber optic cables don’t have any issues with finicky wiring.  They don’t pose safety or fire hazards due to connectivity issues, and their length limits far exceed that of Cat6 cabling.  However, fiber optics are also quite susceptible to damage, and when they aren’t cared for properly, they can stop working altogether.  This is especially problematic, because these defects causing catastrophic problems may not even be visible to the naked eye.  If you have intense network requirements, fiber optic cabling may be the best choice for you.
