The theme of WTISD-2016 is “Information and Communications Technology (ICT) entrepreneurship for social impact.”

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recognizes today, May 17th, as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD-2016). This year, WTISD is focused on the theme “Information and Communications Technology (ICT) entrepreneurship for social impact.”

What is Information and Communications Technology (ICT)?

The umbrella term Information and Communications Technology (ICT) references any communication device or application that encompasses radio, television, mobile communication, computer and network hardware, satellite communication systems, and more. The term ICT also references the numerous unified communications services and applications associated with the aforementioned systems, including video conferencing and web collaboration.

The History of World Telecom and Information Society Day

On May 17, 1865, the world’s oldest international organization – the ITU (formerly known as The International Telegraph Union) – was founded and the first ever International Telegraph Convention was signed by 20 states. In November 2005, the UN General Assembly declared May 17th as World Information Society Day in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of ICT. It wasn’t until the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey in November 2006 that both events were celebrated together and recognized as WTISD.

What is the Purpose of WTISD?

Our society, economy, and self-sustainability depends heavily on keeping up with technological advances. WTISD is celebrated annually to raise awareness about an identified theme (2016: ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact) and stimulate further development of technologies in the field, while inspiring discussions about underlying issues and resolutions. In the words of ITU:

  • “ICT entrepreneurs and start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a particularly relevant role in ensuring economic growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner. They are involved in the development of innovative ICT-enabled solutions with a unique potential to make a long-lasting impact in global, regional and national economies and as an important source of new jobs, especially for youth, in the current knowledge economy.”
